Credit Elasticities in Less-Developed Economies: Implications for Microfinance
نویسنده
چکیده
Microcredit fights poverty by expanding access to credit. Some microfinance institutions (MFIs) focus on maximizing profits, and do so while lending to the poor. Others seek to maximize access for the poor subject to a budget constraint. Regardless, nearly all MFIs face pressure from policymakers, donors, and investors to eliminate their reliance on subsidies. Economic modeling, policy, and practice suggest that loan pricing is critically related to reliance on subsidies, and to the functioning of credit markets more generally. Yet existing research offers little evidence on interest rate sensitivities in MFI target markets, and little methodological guidance on how to derive optimal rates. Instead, MFIs and policymakers rely heavily on descriptive evidence and intuition. Policymakers often presume that the poor are largely insensitive to interest rates, and then prescribe that MFIs should increase rates without fear of reducing

Immiserizing Credit: Challenging the Efficacy of Microfinance
Despite a dearth of theoretical studies, there is widespread perception that microfinance is an enormously useful tool for economic development. However, an increasing number of households in lesser developed countries are facing the same debt squeeze as those in the developed world, but are less able to manage debt responsibilities. The consequences are much more dramatic for LDC households be...

The price elasticity of demand for credit has major implications for macroeconomics, finance, and development. We present estimates of this parameter derived from a randomized trial. The experiment was implemented by a consumer microfinance lender in South Africa and identifies demand curves that, while downward-sloping with respect to price, are flatter than recent estimates in both developing...

متن کاملLong-Run Price Elasticities of Demand for Credit: Evidence from a Countrywide Field Experiment in Mexico Executive Summary
The initial promise of microcredit, including such accolades as the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, has given way to intense debate about if and when it is an effective development tool. Interest rates are central to this debate. Policymakers and donors promoting financial development have variously encouraged microfinance institutions (MFIs) to cut rates to expand access (under the assumption of elast...
